Towards A Unified Perspective of Abstractions for Parallel and Distributed Programming(Invited Lecture)

The development of applications that require integrated forms of parallel and distributed computing is becoming critically important. On one hand, there is a diversity of parallel and distributed computing models, developed on top of heterogeneous platforms and physical infrastructures. On the other hand, systems and applications exhibit increasing levels of interaction among their components, new forms of dynamic behavior, and larger scale. In this talk, a global overview is presented of abstractions and programming models to handle distribution and parallelism, scale, and dynamic behavior. This is related to an effort to identify unifying abstractions that can ease the building and managing of complex parallel and distributed applications.
