Research Strategies in IT Project Management(Invited Lecture)
By: Fernando Brito e Abreu
Based on the experience as supervisor of more than 20 dissertations and on the participation of many more dissertation evaluation panels, both at PhD and MSc levels, I collected and sistematized a catalog of "dissertation smells", i.e. common flaws found both in structure and contents. This lecture went through this catalog and strategies to avoid or mitigate these smells were discussed. This lecture also presented a set of good examples of dissertations on IT Project Management issues, including topics such as IT service management, IT process modelling or agile IT project management practices. Those cases provided examples of different research approaches, both quantitative and qualitative. This invited lecture took place in the context of the course "Advanced Topics on Project Management", that is part of the Master of Science in Project Management at ISEG/UTL, by invitation of this MSc program coordinator (Pro. Mário Caldeira).
