Information Visualization is a scientific area aiming to facilitate the exploration and understanding of information. It mostly relies on interactive visual representations of data and a variety of techniques to represent and manipulate information. One of its sub-areas is Document Visualization. In this case, the focus is on automated methods for indexing documents from a large document collection and to present them graphically. The ultimate goal is to present users an efficient overview of contents and themes of a document collection, so enabling a quick understanding of a document instead of forcing the reading immediately. In this dissertation, after providing an overview of Information Visualization area, in particular aspects related to Document Visualization, we propose a new Document Visualization system concept – Magnet Mail – related to the email paradigm. This concept intends to help users on analysis and decision making tasks of searching and comparing emails. We will discuss some problems related to the email paradigm and how to overcome them with this new concept. Then, we will present some feedback we got from potential users in order to draw some conclusions about its usability and effectiveness. We will also set a framework to extend further the concept, namely to the web-search paradigm.
