Fernando Brito e Abreu holds a PhD on Computer Science, a MSc and a BSc on Telecommunications and Computer Engineering, all from the IST (Lisbon Technical University). He is currently an associate professor at the Department of Information Sciences and Technologies of the ISCTE-IUL, a public university in Lisbon, Portugal. He was formerly assistant professor at the Department of Informatics of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and in the past he also lectured at ISEGI/UNL, IST/UTL, ISEG/UTL and in the Portuguese Air Force Academy. He was also an invited professor at the Département Informatique of the École des Mines de Nantes during a decade, in the scope of the European master program EMOOSE. In the mentioned universities he has been responsible and lecturer for courses on software engineering, software architectures, systems analysis, object-oriented design, object-oriented programming, experimental software engineering and product and process quality.

 As a researcher, first at INESC Lisbon and then at CITI (FCT/UNL), he produced over two hundred scientific and technical documents. Among the latter are over 20 papers on journals such as: Science of Computer Programming, Journal of Systems and Software, IEEE Latin America, Object Expert, Computer Standards & Interfaces, ERCIM News, Personal Computer World, L'Objet, Qualirama, Sistemas de Informação and Interface. At CITI he leads the QUASAR research team, where around twenty graduations (including 4 PhDs) were, or are being, concluded under his supervision. QUASAR focuses on quantitative aspects on software engineering and reengineering. At CITI, he also heads the team-project VALSE (VALidation of Software Engineering methods, techniques and tools).  He was the president of CS/03 (Sectorial Committee for Quality in Information and Communication Technologies) of the Portuguese Institute for Quality, during 8 years. He is now the Portuguese delegate at TC2 (Software: Theory and Practice) of IFIP, which is presided by Bertrand Meyer. He is member of the editorial board of the Software Quality Professional journal (American Society for Quality) and a regular reviewer in major international journals, conferences and workshops worldwide, and research project proposals. He has served in the organization of many scientific meetings as member of the steering committee, organizing chair, program chair, program committee member, demonstration chair, keynote or tutorial speaker, panel member or session chair.

In the scope of applied research, he has promoted the celebration of several collaboration protocols, namely between: (i) INESC and the Portuguese Navy, (ii) CS/03 and itSMF Portugal, (iii) NAV (Portuguese Air Traffic Management Authority) and FCT/UNL, and (iv) SINFIC (major softwarehouse) and FCT/UNL. Besides the projects developed in the scope of these protocols, he has participated in several scientific projects funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, as well as other academic extension projects in the Portuguese Post Office, Portugal Telecom or the National Republic Assembly (Portuguese parliament).

 His current research interests are centered in the following two research threads, more specifically in the identified topics:

 - Software Engineering / Information Systems thread:

Visualization and assessment of complex software systems; assessment of the impact of technological migration (e.g. from objects to aspects); reengineering of legacy information systems by applying refactoring and pattern-based techniques; model-based development; web engineering; experimental software engineering.

 - IT Service Management / Services Science thread:

Assessment of process complexity; ontologies for IT services; incident management forecasting models; IT service level management; assessment of service-oriented architectures.

 In the above-mentioned research threads he has applied several modeling and meta-modeling techniques, the formalization of quantitative indicators by using a constraints language, data analysis techniques (e.g. classificatory analysis, regression models, and time series) and tests of hypotheses.
