|José Legatheaux Martins|
José Legatheaux Martins is a professor of distributed computer systems and computer networks at the Department of Informatics of DI-FCT/UNL. From 2007 to 2011 he was Head of the Department of Informatics and Vice Dean of FCT/UNL for the Scientific Council.
José graduated from FCT/UNL in Engenharia Informática in 1979. From 1983 to 1987 he was a researcher at INRIA (Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique) in France were he worked on the Chorus Distributed Operating System and in the SOR teams. At the end of 1986 he obtained his PhD degree in Distributed Systems from Université de Rennes I in France. From 1988 to 1992 he was with the University of Lisbon and from then on he is with the New University of Lisbon.
He is a founding member of the Research Center for Informatics and Information Technologies ( Centro de Investigação em Informática e Tecnologias da Informação - CITI ). At CITI he belongs to the Computing Systems thematic research area. His main current research interests are related with routing in computer networks and the future evolution of the Internet.
From 1990 to 1994 he lead the national project that established the portuguese branch of the Internet and lead the PUUG – Portuguese Unix Users Group, and the portuguese branch of EUnet, both not for profit organizations promoting Open Systems and the TCP/IP network suite and the Internet adoption. He was one of the founders of a portuguese Internet Service Provider that has been acquired in 2000 by the US based Qwest Communications Company.
