Work on an approach to rank opportunities for refactoring in software artifacts, focusing on those opportunities that are more likely to improve a set of software quality attributes. The approach uses (i) metrics-based evaluation functions to quantitatively rank refactoring opportunities and (ii) impact functions to evaluate the eff ects of refactoring (without actually having to refactor the artifacts). The approach aims to help developers to choose the best refactoring opportunities in a given context.
